New Turf

Now it was time to cover some new ground. From Trollheimshytta we headed to Todalen, a deep valley cut into the mountains from the west. Our day's ski ended with a steep drop to the valley floor at around 200 meters above sea level, where we knew the snow was already gone and we would proably have to walk the last bit. But it was also a warm sunny day, and our descent was on a south facing slope, so when we got there in late afternoon the snow was 'rotten' -- soft and slushy -- making for difficult skiing and walking over bare spots on the downhills.

Kårvatn is a koseligself-service hut converted from one of the outbuildings at a road's-end farm of the same name, owned by a family of the same name. We learned that the farm has been continuously owned by the Kårvatn family since the 18th century, and with one exception the first-born of each generation has been named alternately Erik or Gudmund, right up to the present owner, Gudmund, and his son, Erik. We had cozy the hut all to ourselves, and rainy weather kept us there for a rest day.

Given the weather, we didn't make the hike up to Naustafossen, but the hut is only a few hours' drive from Trondheim, so we'll have to revisit in the summer.
