Five: The World's Most Expensive Door

Nancy found it at Mason Brothers Salvage in Essex. An 8-foot high, arch-top, 4-panel door, PERFECT for our new living room entrance, which was then sealed up by a blank sheet of plywood. It was a STEAL! We'd just have George build a frame for it, and replace the two upper panels with custom insulated glass and...VOILA!

Here it is ten years later in December, 2001. George did a beautiful job on the frame, but building a frame for an arch top door is no simple thing. So it cost a little more than we had planned. So did the glass. And then there was the antique handle Rick found at another salvage place. But what style!

Epilogue: The WMED has been kicked in not one, not two, but THREE whole times -- twice by burglars and once by our tenant (we lived near Boston for 9 months in '96-'97) who had locked himself out. Each required extensive repairs, adding to its illustrious pecuniary history. To prevent any further break-ins we finally had our friend and neighbor, Tom Howard, build a double hardwood outer door with heavy wooden bars. Again, as a custom job it was not cheap. But what style!
