Svellnosbreen

Spiterstulen offers guided tours on and sometimes into the Svellnosbre, one of the five glaciers that surround Galdhøpiggen. It has retreated partway up the mountain and now ends in this heavily crevassed ice fall.

We approached the glacier by hiking up the lateral moraine, a steep ridge of crushed rock that was shed off to the side of the glacier when it flowed down into the valley.

Molly though her dad looked pretty cool with a coil of rope over his shoulder, and so took this picture.

Roped up for safety.

Our fearless guide Martin giving a little on-ice lecture about glaciers.

We wore simple instep crampons to make it possible to walk on the ice. We didn't get to go into any deep-blue crevasses this time but had a nice wander over the glacier surface. A bit of a goofer trip but still pretty scenic.

A brace of brave Bazilchuks!
